About the Service

Hodder Gibson Accessible Digital PDFs (Portable Document Format) from CALL Scotland:

CALL Scotland and Hodder Gibson are developing a service for providing print-disabled pupils in Scotland with accessible digital copies of books in PDF.

The PDFs have been supplied by Hodder and then adapted by CALL Scotland and David Imrie at Ashcraig School in Glasgow. They are suitable for pupils with visual impairment, physical disability or dyslexia. The books have hyperlinks for easy navigation, can be magnified on-screen and read out with text-to-speech software.

The books are available on CD, free of charge (subject to a print copy having been bought, and also subject to very strict copyright terms and conditions) from CALL Scotland. There are strict guidelines on their usage, and teachers need to sign up to the Terms and Conditions for each book before giving students access. Please note that that usage of Accessible Digital Copies outwith these terms and conditions may result in legal action against you and/or your educational establishment.

To request a book, send us a Request Form by post.

If the book you need is not on our list, contact us and we will ask Hodder if it is available digitally. Sometimes there may be a cost to obtain the digital file of the book: CALL does not have a budget to pay for files and so before we order the file we will tell you what it costs and ask you if you are willing to pay for it. We will then send you an invoice when we send you the CD with the book. (Our grant from the Scottish Government covers our time and costs of adapting the book, but not the cost of sourcing the original files.)
